“My absence is out of respect for the people of my country,” says Oscar winner and Iranian-American Asghar Farhadi in a statement read by a proxy this evening during the Oscars. He won the Oscar for his trite melodrama, The Salesman, but should have gotten it for lying.

The Oscars are predictable. They gave the award to two Muslims so far, Mahershala Ali and Asghar Farhadi. The Oscars aren’t about who was best, it’s about politics.
