Both Republicans and Democrats have encouraged open borders for different reasons but regardless of one’s viewpoint, the one thing we should all be able to agree on is that our government should deport convicted criminals here illegally. Apparently, we can’t even agree on this because many in the left-leaning mainstream media are strongly defending sanctuary cities despite a recent murder by a felon here illegally.
Sanctuary cities aren’t all that different from gun-free zones and criminals know it. They go to the places where they can more easily commit their crimes, whether they be criminals or terrorists. Sanctuary cities are meant to shield the innocent just as gun-free zones are but they allow criminals to operate in a freer environment.
More than 160 cities now openly flout the law and provide sanctuary for criminals if they are foreigners.
The government likes to be involved in every picayune aspect of our lives but doesn’t want to enforce federal laws on the books when they don’t like them.
Five-time deportee, seven-time convicted felon Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, pictured below, killed Kate Steinle by “mistake” – an “accident” – he said during a 45-minute jailhouse interview, claiming he didn’t remember much about what happened, just that he was drinking water and the gun went off as he unwrapped it after finding it on the street. He had told police something different.
He told the local ABC News affiliate that he came to San Francisco because he knew the sanctuary city would not hand him over to immigration officials and he was “looking for jobs in the restaurant or roofing, landscaping, or construction.”
The fact is that he went to a sanctuary city because he knew that is where he could go to commit his crimes and not be deported to his native country.
In 2007, during an interview with Tim Russert, Hillary Clinton clearly stated that she fully supports sanctuary cities violating federal law because she didn’t like the law as written.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, during an interview with George Stephanopoulos, said that the federal government and San Francisco are wrong.
Goodlatte explained to George Stephanopoulos that Barack Obama is not enforcing immigration laws.
Goodlatte asked why San Francisco would release somebody back onto their streets who’s illegally in the United States and has committed seven prior felonies “when they could have contacted ICE and turned them back over to them for deportation and again she would have been saved. A real tragedy.”
Stephanopoulos, remarkably, unbelievably, said, “What’s the answer here? Should there be a law that requires states to turn over those who have been charged in the past. Those who have been deported in the past. Those who have been charged with illegal crimes?”
Stephanopoulos apparently doesn’t know that sanctuary cities are agains the law but he claims to be a serious journalist.
Goodlatte stated the obvious -“‘That is the law, that was the law. The policy regarding detainees which is the law of the United States was enforced by the Bush administration as mandatory. The Obama administration has converted that into something voluntary and in doing so, they have eliminated a program that was working called ‘secure communities’.'” [January 5, 2012]
At the United States Conference of Mayors in January of this year, DHS Chief Jeh Johnson said ‘secure communities’ was too controversial. He was replacing it, he said, with a “Priority Enforcement” program which asks locales to prioritize those criminals who they deem to be worth reporting.
In the past, under secure communities, felons like Sanchez were detained and turned over to immigration. Goodlatte mentioned that the Obama administration is also releasing criminal onto our streets.
It is a federal crime to conceal or harbor criminals, to provide sanctuary to illegal immigrant criminals and this law was upheld by SCOTUS. California allows local law enforcement to decide who to hold in clear violation of the federal law with the administration’s blessings.
Judicial Watch released 76 pages of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents which show that as of April 26, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security released 165,900 convicted criminal aliens into our neighborhoods throughout the United States. Judicial Watch obtained the information via a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
I.C.E. released another 36,000, bringing that number to over 200,000.
Crimes they have committed include homicide, sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. Some are more minor infractions and some are for drunk driving.
Homeland Security not only admitted the release, they justified it by saying the new policies don’t allow I.C.E. to detain them and their home countries don’t want them, therefore the solution is to free them onto our streets.
This has implications on a far broader level. If criminals know how protective sanctuary cities are, terrorists do too.
