The Amazing Legendary Willie Mays & The Catch

I didn’t write much about Willie Mays last night, and there is so much to say. Everyone who knew him is doing that today. What could I add? However, people have to know about The Catch.

I think Willie Mays was the best all-around baseball player of all time, not second or third – the best. He was also smart – a quick thinker.

I am sad that he didn’t make his last public appearance. He said he would make it unless he were dead.

a few additions – the stunning catch was in game #1 of the 1954 WORLD SERIES played in New York’s – plenty of media fanfare. The stadium was the old Polo Grounds, with its IMMENSE center field area. With the score tied 2-2, top of the 8th inning, the visiting Cleveland Indians were at bat with 2 runners on base, no outs. A long drive was hit to straight centerfiekd; the Giants young centerfielder, Willie Mays, running full speed, back to the infield, CAUGHT the ball 421 feet from home plate!! (Apparently this type of stunning ‘over the shoulder’ catch by an outfielder running at top speed had been previously UNSEEN – at least in ‘anglicized’ baseball); Mays pointed out his ensuing quick throw back to the infield was as important in that it prevented the lead baserunner from scoring. The Giants went on to win Game#1 as well as the next 3 games – winning the 7-game World Series against the favored Indians 4 games to none.

I suspect he could do that over and over.

and he DID! (and, not merely Willie’s ‘production and results’, but HOW he did it – the enthusiasm and zest!)
in fact – Willie claims this was not even his ‘greatest’ catch!
