Xi Van Fleet was on the mark when she talked about the “useful idiots” that lack critical thinking. I started school in 1949 and graduated from High School in1962. Critical thinking and sound reasoning were emphasized. We were prepared for a lifelong process of learning. My sister started 6 years later. By the time she was in the 4th grade,1960 there was a shift to learning facts. When facts become the goal then the person is geared to accepting “facts” and using them, rather than determining if the facts are true. To paraphrase Linda Goudsmit: Are the facts in the realm of objective reality or that reality not facts but a part of subjective reality. I and my friends have often marvelled at the senseless mobs in Moslem countries shouting “Death to…” when it make no sense, until one realises they are in a world of subjective reality. With no free press they only know the propaganda they have been fed. Students who are looking for excitement (even willing to try drugs) can be easily seduced into mob action by being given pseudo facts and told they can save… this or that. President Trump appointed a secretary for the Department of Education who understood we need a total revamp of our education system. In a sense a lot of the trouble today comes from the compromised educational system. f we don’t fix it right down to pre-school, we will just keep producing “useful idiots” to be used b our enemies.
