In Christopher Nolan’s epic film adaptation of The Odyssey, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o takes on the dual roles of Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra. The movie—which centers on Odysseus’s perilous journey home after the Trojan War—premieres in theaters on July 17, 2026.
It’s going to bomb.
Instead of going with Homer’s version of Helen of Troy, Christopher Nolan cast a Mexican African actress to push a DEI agenda. Indeed, changing history often doesn’t go over well, especially when it’s done to push an agenda.
The Story of the Most Beautiful Woman in the Greek World
Helen of Troy, the mythological daughter of Zeus and mortal queen Leda, is renowned as the most beautiful woman in the ancient Greek world. Her unparalleled beauty was the catalyst for the 10-year Trojan War after she eloped with (or was abducted by) the Trojan prince Paris.
In most legends, she was the daughter of Zeus. Even as a child, she was so extraordinarily beautiful that the hero Theseus briefly kidnapped her.
When Paris visited Sparta and took Helen to Troy, Menelaus invoked the Oath, gathering a massive Greek fleet of over a thousand ships to retrieve her.
She had the face that launched a thousand ships.
While classical art and literature don’t give a detailed modern physical breakdown, she was generally characterized by flawless features, a long, slender neck, golden hair, and eyes that perfectly mirrored her divine lineage.
Stories of her beauty have inspired artists and writers to represent her as the personification of ideal human beauty. Images of Helen started appearing in the 7th century BC.
No one but Christopher Nolan picked out a Mexican African actress for the role.
Here’s the new Helen of Troy as depicted in the Odyssey. She was Christopher Nolan’s first pick.

Here is a better photo of Lupita:

Having someone who doesn’t fit the story at all is just stupid.
They should have looked for someone who looks like this:

If you want the audience to consider more than just her face, it would be best to develop her character rather than make her something entirely different from the blonde beauty who launched a thousand ships.

They are trying to push it because they got a lot of pushback. However, the phony narcissists acting during interviews probably won’t convince anyone. The movie “allegedly touches every human level.”
