We now have 7,000 people nationwide who have acquired the food-borne illness, Cyclosporiasis. It’s in 34 states. NBC says it is caused by an intestinal parasite that might come from green produce (lettuce, basil, raspberries) or contaminated water. Victims get explosive diarrhea for weeks. They can also experience stomach cramps, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
The Washington Post reports that Taco Bell is under investigation as one possible source.
Some locations have stopped serving lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and cilantro onion as a precautionary measure. Michigan health officials suspect contaminated lettuce may be linked to the outbreak.
The fast food chain is being investigated by federal and state officials to determine whether it is linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreaks that have infected thousands of people in the U.S., per The Washington Post.
The outlet reported that two individuals familiar with the ongoing investigation said it is looking into whether Taco Bell restaurants contributed to the outbreaks of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic foodborne illness that causes “explosive” diarrhea.
That isn’t going to be good for Taco Bell’s business. Taco Bell is taking every possible problem vegetable off the menu so you can still eat there.
Taco Bell has survived numerous investigations, including the E. coli, mystery meat, and horse meat scandals.
Maybe it’s just a bad idea to have children in Mexico pick your vegetables.
