Conservative Marine Le Pen, who is repeatedly labeled far-right for being conservative, not because she is far-right, had her sentence reduced by a French appeals court. They upheld her conviction but not the full sentence. However, she has had a reprieve during her appeal and will run for office.
The 5-year ban preventing her from running for office was reduced to a 3-year jail term: 2 suspended and 1 with an electronic ankle tag. This would make a presidential campaign politically and logistically difficult and cast doubt on whether she would continue to seek France’s highest office.
The French elites went to great lengths to keep her off the ballot. The trial for embezzlement appeared to be a show trial with an unprecedented penalty, including a prison sentence and a five-year ban from running for president.
She wouldn’t be able to run even with the reduced punishment, since the ankle bracelet would prevent her from campaigning. She would be stuck in a small radius around her home.
That has changed. She can run for office without the ankle bracelet while she is appealing the decision.

As for the far-right label, that was her father, not her. The NY Times writes:
&…Ms. Le Pen pulled the party away from its most toxic roots, expelling her father and renaming it. She describes herself as a populist — “neither left nor right” — who champions economic nationalism and defending France’s welfare state. She abandoned a push for France to follow Britain out of the European Union. But the party continues to be anti-immigrant and deeply hostile to the E.U.
Now, she finds herself potentially closer to the pinnacle of French politics than at any point in her career.
Le Pen isn’t anti-immigrant. She is anti-massive immigration and wants to preserve French culture, politics, and democracy, if they are still a democracy. As for the EU, they are the source of the massive immigration problem now destroying Europe.
The EU President, Ursula von der Leyen, will not like this outcome and will wield her power with the help of other unsavory globalists to defeat Marine Le Pen.
