Magical thinking is the belief that your thoughts, wishes, or actions can directly affect the physical world or cause unrelated events to happen without a logical connection. One could argue this may well be the basis for Marxists’ continued boasting about a form of government that’s brought misery, poverty, and bloodshed, while failing in nation after nation, throughout history.
New York City’s “Bumbling Boy Mayor” Zohran Mamdani, perhaps the king of magical thinkers, has recently seen his crown tarnished by reality.

He was viciously booed at a National Night Out event on Staten Island. Nights Out are moments for local law enforcement and first responders to build relationships with the communities they serve. When Mamdani climbed onstage, sporting his typical Cheshire cat grin, the 3,500 locals erupted so loudly that he cut his remarks to a bare minute before fleeing.
There are still no free buses. Nonetheless, scores of people are riding without paying, counting Mamdani’s campaign promise as their free pass.
Still no government-run grocery stores. There was supposed to be one in each of the 5 boroughs. Tens of millions of dollars are gone, without so much as a single item on any shelf. The latest guess is maybe by 2029.
A red-faced Mayor Mamdani blamed a “miscommunication” Tuesday after an awkward public clash between City Hall and NYPD officials. The spat was over whether the department would provide security for his wife Rama Duwaji’s upcoming Middle East trip. Mamdani’s spokeswoman Dora Pekec initially claimed, “Upon the strong recommendation of the NYPD, the first lady’s security detail will be joining her when she travels to visit family in Syria and Lebanon.” Those two nations are on the US State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list. Showing a consideration for the safety of its cops, the mayor and his bride did not, a department spokesman said, “The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level four travel advisories for discretionary reasons….”
The pied-à-terre tax has been a disaster on every level, including a horrifically botched rollout. Zohran employed a Soviet style “enemies list” that had tens of thousands of full-time NYC residents trying to defend their status against charges that they were super-wealthy out-of-towners. The mayor was slapped down by a Staten Island Supreme Court Justice, who issued a temporary restraining order against the new levy.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani was snubbed from eulogizing Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad at the fallen soldier’s Queens funeral. The embarrassing scene unfolded while he sat in the fourth row and waited in vain to give his speech. Meanwhile, other invited dignitaries were making their remarks. That this took place in multi-ethnic Queens, in a neighborhood he easily carried last November, should teach him some powerful lessons.
For that to happen, Mamdani would have to, at some level, admit his Marxist wishes cannot directly affect the physical reality in which we’re all forced to live. That doesn’t seem very likely.
