Old Glory has flown over battlefields, front porches, and the graves of our nation’s heroes. Flag Day reminds us what America stands for — freedom, sacrifice, and liberty — and deserves our respect today and every day. ~ Sen. John Kennedy

Flag Day is celebrated annually on June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1777. While it is not a federal holiday, it is widely observed nationwide through parades, patriotic displays, and presidential proclamations.

The Birth of the US Flag and the US Army

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the flag of the United States would be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, and that the union would have 13 stars, white on a blue field.

President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. It was signed into law as a national observance by President Harry Truman in 1949.

The week containing Flag Day is designated as National Flag Week. Americans are encouraged to fly the Stars and Stripes. Communities across the country host events, with notable celebrations occurring in places like Philadelphia’s Historic District and Branson, Missouri.

June 14 also marks the official birthday of the United States Army, which was established by the Continental Congress in 1775.
