President Trump Reluctantly Attends the NATO Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for NATO membership at the summit. He said it is a logical step. It’s more like a logical step into direct war with Russia.

If they want the US to quit NATO, accepting Ukraine would be a logical step.

President Trump said the only reason he is attending is because Turkey’s President Erdogan requested his presence.

Topics on the Agenda
  • US President Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO continues to strain the 77-year-old alliance. NATO’s chief says US allies have made “remarkable progress” with defense spending, something President Trump called for.
  • Trump is expected to signal at the summit that he is willing to sell Turkey F-35 fighter jets, according to two US officials, reversing a ban he put in place during his first term that has since been ratified into law.

Turkey has sent troops and proxies into Syria, Libya, and northern Iraq. They are harassing Greece. Between 2012 and 2016, the Turkish government laundered $20 billion in illicit Iranian funds at the height of the effort to thwart Iran’s nuclear program. Its intelligence chief and other senior officials have repeatedly hosted Hamas leadership in Istanbul. The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned multiple Turkish entities for routing funds to Hamas’s military operations. Meanwhile, the Turks continue to deploy military assets in Africa. Selling fighter jets to them is concerning.

On the other hand, selling fighter jets and engine components to Turkey—a key NATO ally—provides the U.S. with significant strategic advantages, including strengthening the alliance’s southern flank, securing leverage to counter Russian and Iranian influence, and supporting U.S. defense manufacturing

Israel wants Trump to get Turkey to pull back on aggression.

  • The Trump administration anticipates security in the Strait of Hormuz to be among the key topics discussed by NATO leaders, according to a senior US official.

Iran fired missiles at a Qatari tanker in the Strait of Hormuz as they pass near Oman.

  • The president is also expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara.
