Tens of Millions of Dollars Later, NYC Will Have Cuba-Style Groceries

People go to government-run groceries when they first open, and the shelves are full. People will be delighted. And then, over time, the store shelves will be empty, it will be incompetently run, and there will be a lot of complaints about it. Then all the free-market stores will have to compete with this; they may be put out of business, and then you’ll have fewer choices.

At first, Mayor Zohran said they would only require ID from Americans. Then Mamdani said they wouldn’t.

Mamdani is spending years and tens of millions of dollars on a wasted effort, pretending that groceries are robbing people and inflating prices. Most make only 1% to 3% profit, and they do a much better job than the government.

Kansas City had a government-run grocery. They owned the building for the troubled Sun Fresh Market in the Linwood Shopping Center. After nearly $18 million to $29 million in total taxpayer investments and subsidies were poured into the property for over a decade to combat a food desert, the store suffered severe inventory shortages and permanently closed in August 2025.

That will happen here. It’s paid for using the bottomless purse of the middle- and upper-class people, and it fails every time.

Here is a Cuban government-run store. It is what Mamdani, the Ugandan-Indian Mayor of New York City, wants for the City.
