The Somali diaspora sends an estimated $215 million in annual remittances to East Africa, with a large portion originating from Minnesota, home to the nation’s largest Somali population.
Because Somalia’s formal banking system largely collapsed after its civil war, these transactions typically run through alternative remittance services called hawalas, or informal money-transfer operators.
A significant majority of Somali-American households in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area regularly send money back home. Individual families typically send $200 to $500 per month to relatives to pay for essentials like food, medical care, and schooling.
Due to heavy anti-money laundering regulations and commercial banks closing hawala-related wire accounts over terror-financing risks, money transfer operators have increasingly relied on physical couriers. Federal investigators tracking these informal routes flagged nearly $700 million in physical cash detected in passengers’ luggage leaving the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport over the past two years.
Globally, the total Somali diaspora sends home between $1.3 billion and $1.7 billion annually, which sustains up to 40% of Somalia’s population and their corrupt government. The money almost certainly ends up in the hands of the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab.
