Elon Musk has quietly acquired APR Energy, a mobile turbine power company, in a deal valued at over $1 billion. He plans to bypass public utility grid delays and feed his massive xAI data centers. Additionally, xAI purchased a decommissioned 114-acre natural gas power plant site in Southaven, Mississippi.
It was done very quietly. We only found out because the FTC published the transaction. People see it as controversial because it doesn’t seem worth that kind of money. Elon bought it himself with his own money. Batteries and solar will be cheaper. However, Elon has a trillion dollars, and a billion is nothing to him. Buying this company tells you where the real need is.
The company specializes in mobile gas turbines. They are trailer-mounted, but are very expensive to run. It will bypass a strained grid. He can now work at his own pace without waiting five years for approval to build data centers.
The grid can’t keep up. The real bottleneck in AI is electricity, as this purchase shows us.
This purchase probably meets an urgent energy need. It gives Elon immediate access to energy.
