Today is the day that George Washington was appointed to lead the Continental Army, but more than that, it is the Day of the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was reluctantly signed this day in 1215 by King John, the King of England. The peasants finally ruled. The signing took place at Rulocnnymede, a meadow located on the banks of the River Thames in Surrey, England. It was strategically located between Windsor Palace and the rebellion headquarters.
The charter established a set of laws that every British person, including the monarch, was forced to follow.
The story of the Magna Carta in the early 13th century.
King John was despised by his subjects for imposing high taxes, draconian punishments, and widespread imprisonment.
Enraged, a group of powerful barons marched to London. They carried with them a document called the Magna Carta, Latin for the Great Charter.
The proposal outlines so-called fundamental legal rights.
- No man could be arrested or stripped of his property without a trial.
- Churches were free from royal interference.
- High taxes could be approved only by a council of archbishops and other leaders.
- Finally, the feudal lords could seize the king’s assets if he violated the charter’s rules.
Fearing an open rebellion, King John begrudgingly signed the document on June 15, 1215.
For the first time, members of the monarchy were no longer above the law. Shortly after its enactment, the Magna Carta was annulled, then rewritten, and eventually reinstated with even more protections for the commoners.
The Great Charter is directly linked with the US Constitution. When drafting the document, James Madison translated several medieval protections into our Bill of Rights.
Examples include the Fifth Amendment, every citizen’s right to due process, the Sixth Amendment, the right to a speedy trial, and the Eighth Amendment, the ban on excessive bail or fines for those accused or convicted of a crime.
Today, the British Labor government is trying to abolish the right to a jury trial.
