According to The Sun, President Trump announced a bombshell deal with Denmark to take permanent control over Greenland for free and ban all adversaries forever.
President Trump said the deal will cost the United States nothing and will guarantee America will “forever have complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland” to protect the autonomous country and the U.S.
The President said the US would immediately begin developing a large military presence in an appropriate part of Greenland and would work with Greenland’s people on its development and construction.
President Trump took to Truth Social shortly after a press gathering in the Oval Office Friday. He said the deal came after more than 100 years of American presidents recognizing the strategic importance of the Danish territory.
Permanent Access at No Cost
According to Fox News Digital, the agreement gives Washington permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland, along with the ability to establish additional military installations as needed.
The deal reportedly bars China, Russia and other non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or maintaining troops in Greenland. It also restricts adversaries from making sensitive investments in areas such as telecommunications infrastructure, undersea cables, ports and critical minerals.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the agreement as a major US security gain and said it permanently guarantees American security interests in the Arctic at no cost to US taxpayers.
The agreement does not transfer sovereignty over Greenland to the United States. Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty, while the deal has no expiration date and is designed to remain in effect even if Greenland eventually becomes independent.
The US already operates Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland and has maintained military access to the island under a 1951 defense agreement. Under the new deal, Denmark and Greenland would reportedly be consulted on additional US military installations but would not have approval authority.
Trump has stated that Greenland is important to US national security because of its strategic Arctic location and the growing presence and capabilities of Russia and China in the region.
One person said the parties were also discussing arrangements to limit China’s presence on and influence over the island.
Fox News reported that negotiations involving Rubio, White House adviser Stephen Miller, State Department and National Security Council officials, and representatives from Denmark and Greenland began in February.
The governments of Denmark and Greenland have not yet publicly responded to Trump’s announcement.
