A coalition of landlords is taking Mayor Zohran Mamdani to court after the city imposed a two-year rent freeze on nearly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments. Zohran’s appointees rigged the process.
According to the rules, the Rent Guidelines Board is supposed to be independent. Instead, it has become a rubber stamp for Zohran’s campaign promise.
A longtime board member quit the morning of the vote, refusing to participate in what she called a “sham process” where the outcome was dictated first and the data was manipulated to match.
Landlords are getting crushed by soaring taxes, insurance, and utilities. The board’s own data showed many rent-stabilized owners lost money last year. Yet the board still voted for zero increase, for two full years.
Meanwhile, this illogical co-chair of the communist DSA claims landlords should not make double-digit profits. They aren’t making these profits though they should be able to. Most of the owners are small business men and they don’t have big profits. Many barely stay afloat. These communists just lie and manipulate.
This is performative politics at its worst. Zohran is happy to bankrupt them so he can seize their property and give it to his voters.
