Women accounted for 98% of the 162,000 jobs the US added in August, an unprecedented share that could signal broader labor market shifts.
The figure reflects growth in health and caregiving, as well as in local government and education, which “roared back to life,” CNBC noted.
You might hear that because women tend to earn less than men and are likelier to hold multiple jobs, the figure suggests hiring is clustered in low-paying, contingent roles, meaning it’s not “necessarily a positive story for women overall,” Indeed Hiring Lab said. It also belies a trend of American mothers exiting the workforce. Others might say we are seeing discrimination.
This is all cherry-picking. In July, women accounted for 100% of net job losses while all job gains were among men. August then swung the other way, with women taking 98% of gains, especially in education and hospitality.
President Trump wants women to be able to stay home with the children. It is a laudable goal, but the government does better when it does nothing in these types of issues. The Trump administration has a potential plan that would pay at-home parents, the New York Times reported, but critics said it could divert money from other working parents. It’s also more welfare and socialism. Please, less government intervention.
