FAUCI CONTEMPT RESOLUTION MOVES FORWARD
Senator Rand Paul said Dr. Anthony Fauci, 85, had no reasonable fear of criminal prosecution because President Biden’s preemptive pardon covered 2014 – January, 2025.
Ranking member Senator Gary Peters said holding Fauci in contempt set a “damaging precedent.” [Impeaching President Trump with lies as evidence was a “damaging precedent.” Inventing crimes to put President Trump and many of the J6ers in prison set a “damaging precedent.”]
Peters pointed to Chairman Paul’s earlier statements that he was prepared to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department and not seek a vote from the full Senate.
Senators Hassan and Blumenthal and other Democrats said Fauci had a reasonable fear of criminal prosecutions because the pardon did not cover last week’s Senate testimony about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Multiple states have already launched investigations (Pardon does NOT cover future state charges)
Democrats said the Committee should consider seeking a grant of “limited immunity” that would allow Fauci to fully answer questions.
Over a forty-minute period, Senate Committee Democrats tried several procedural moves to block or table the resolution, but all failed.
The final party-line vote was 8-5 in favor of the contempt resolution.
The pardon was likely illegal and should be looked into, but this doesn’t seem like it will go anywhere. Fauci isn’t going to jail.
