Career criminal David Simpson, 29, has a violent criminal history and spent five years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. He has committed crimes just about every year since he served his sentence for manslaughter in 2020. He was released from prison for his latest crime on $10,000 bail, and within an hour and a half, he killed a man and almost killed another.
He’s another Mecklenburg County criminal.
The Charlotte man is back behind bars. Simpson is now charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. A judge has ordered him held without bond.
According to investigators, the shooting grew out of an ongoing dispute over parking at the apartment complex. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police had already responded twice that evening to arguments involving the same group.
Simpson’s girlfriend was with him and charged as an accessory.

They could have done something to prevent this.
Defense attorney Tim Cannady said prosecutors had options to ask a judge to revoke Simpson’s bond after he picked up new charges.
“When he got the new charge in either 2025… the DA’s office could have filed a motion… done a hearing, and asked the judge to revoke the bonds in his prior cases,” Cannady said.
Court records show another firearm charge and a resisting arrest charge against Simpson were dismissed in April.
Cannady said, despite one case being dismissed, Simpson’s repeated arrests involving weapons raise concerns.
“Granted, one of them was dismissed, but he picked up two separate weapons charges, and no one revoked his bond,” Cannady said.
