Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced a short, two-page bill Monday to amend the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938 by inserting the language “social media influencers” under the definition of “publicity agent.”
“Americans should be able to know when the people shaping conversations online are acting on behalf of foreign interests,” Luna said in a statement. “The Foreign Propaganda Disclosure Act brings foreign-backed influence operations into the light and sends a clear message that America’s public square is not for sale.”

It’s not much of a crackdown, as Politico claims. It’s a reasonable first step so people know if foreigners or their paid acolytes are trying to damage the country through political influence.
The bill has the backing of Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, as well as Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.
While we are on the subject, we also need to stop listening to podcast grifters who don’t have solid core values, values that shift with the wind.
We need to be cautious, more cautious than I realized.
Foreign influence involves actions by foreign governments or their agents to shape public opinion, policies, elections, or academic research in another country. Examples include covert social media disinformation campaigns, funding university research without proper disclosure, and targeting diaspora communities to monitor or silence critics abroad, says the Brennan Center. They are left-wing, but they aren’t wrong on this issue.
No one wants to limit speech, but we should know if foreigners or people acting on behalf of foreigners are forming our opinions and shaping our news.
Targeted news feeds are one problem; fake MAGAs and disguised communists are another.
