The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 300,000 Venezuelan migrants while legal appeals continue.
U.S. District Judge Edward M. Chen ruled that the administration’s termination of the program was unlawful.
The Supreme Court issued an emergency stay, pausing the lower court’s block while the government appeals.
Affected Venezuelan nationals lose their temporary protection from deportation and work authorization while the lawsuit proceeds. For now, the President can deport them.
The legal battle continues in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
This has been going on since February.
Liberal justices criticized the majority for intervening through the emergency docket on lower-court rulings finding the policy unlawful. Many of the Venezuelans are hardened criminals. Send them all home so we don’t miss a single criminal.
Of course, it’s legal for the President to cancel TPS.
