Senator Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized for three weeks. His wife, Elaine Chao, appeared in China just days after his hospitalization to meet with high-ranking Chinese officials. The trip was planned before Mitch’s hospitalization.
Desiree Townsend, an independent journalist who works on Capitol Hill, expressed concerns about national security.
“If Senator McConnell has been unable to independently perform his duties, what safeguards exist to ensure classified intelligence briefings, defense appropriations information, or other sensitive congressional matters could not be accessed, discussed, or shared by individuals operating behind the scenes? And given the timing of Chao’s meeting with China’s vice president, what exactly was discussed?”
Senator Mitch McConnell has now been hospitalized for three weeks. The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated, especially given that his wife, Elaine Chao, appeared in China just days after his hospitalization to meet with high-ranking Chinese officials. Elaine Chao traveled to China in June for a long-planned trip to support her family’s philanthropic endeavors. During her visit, she met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng to discuss efforts to strengthen U.S.-China relations. Her spokesperson noted the senator’s health at the time did not warrant an early return to the U.S.
Leader Thune said McConnell is in touch daily and working from the hospital.
Elaine Chao left for China three days after her husband was rushed to the hospital with an emergency advanced life support warning. It’s likely the life support warning was temporary or unnecessary. He wouldn’t be on that for three weeks at his age and still be alive.
According to The Intercept, the McConnells have funds offshore. Who knows? However, after decades in the Senate, he should have retired long ago.
Chao’s parents fled the Chinese Communists to Taiwan, where she was born.
