Leeds Canon Paul Maybury pulled a tapestry with 18 Hamas terrorist names. The Canon was shown proof, and he closed the exhibit. The Stitch Their Names Together exhibition was due to run until Sunday, but the Minster announced on Friday morning that it had closed.
It closed after days of controversy.
Canon Maybury said “history is complex” when questioned about the murdered Bibas children and replied “no comment” when asked for his view of Hamas.
He apologized and removed the offensive tapestry, but only after much effort by the Jewish community.
The Sun reported that the tribute tapestry showed at least 25 names of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad “martyrs”.
This was only days after the Archbishop of Canterbury gave an award to a radical Islamist imam on 9/11. Among other things, the Islamist imam praised Osama bin Laden for attacking Brits and Americans.
Brigitte Gabriel of Act for America said the Church of England has lost its moral compass.
The vetting was terrible, and by all accounts, the Canon wasn’t receptive to any feedback.
How many are there like this in the Church of England? If this is representative, then how does it even get fixed? That’s a terrible thought. Our Christian churches are very important. England is very important.
