Fox News and the four other major television networks have stopped sharing White House pool camera coverage of President Donald Trump after the administration barred CNN from its assigned rotation. Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton, who chairs the TV pool this quarter, sent the notice Monday.
“This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Boughton wrote. “This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.”
To clarify, President Trump didn’t ban CNN, MSNowDNC, or Politico. He canceled their access to the White House. They have no particular right to that.
The White House Fox Goes Around the Fake News
Even though Trump’s choice to ban them close to the midterms doesn’t seem like the best idea, he has a plan. The White House Fox might be outsmarting everyone.
First, other favorable outlets will have access. Newsmax, Real America’s Voice, other independent journalists, social media pages of Trump aides, and the White House X page will do well. Maybe Nick Shirley should jump in.
Second, you can now get real-time access to privileged White House communications by downloading the app for $25. You will get information usually reserved for the mainstream media. That way, you decide for yourself what he is saying without the mainstream media’s biased filters. Truthfully, the White House is biased too, so just pick out the facts and do your own research. For decades, that pool existed because the networks wanted to split costs, not because the Constitution requires a CNN cameraman on Air Force One. When the White House said CNN would not do Monday’s job, the others could have done it. The Daily Wire is right that Fox pulling the plug is the unexpected turn. A network that built its audience covering Trump chose the guild over the story.
And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
That is the real scandal. Not a president who finally treated persistent falsehood as a reason to revoke a courtesy. The scandal is a press corps that will deny the country pictures of its own president rather than admit it is a faction with a camera.
And someone will film. It’s a great opportunity for truth-tellers.
The vacuum will not last. Real America’s Voice plans to stream from the UN. Hearst will cover White House events. Independent cameras exist. So do phones. The networks are betting Trump will blink because he likes television. Maybe he will. Maybe he will let the old cartel sit in the dark while newer outlets take the shot.
They can file their brief. They can stand on the sidewalk and narrate an empty driveway. What they cannot do is pretend this is 1791. A free press prints, broadcasts, and publishes without a permission slip. It does not get a guaranteed chair next to the Resolute Desk after years of treating the man behind it as an enemy of the republic. If the pictures vanish today, it is because the people who own the cameras chose the boycott.
They know about the lies and omissions, and still they persist.
