According to the Edmonton Journal, a leading figure in the Alberta separatist movement claims the group has met the signature threshold to potentially trigger a referendum and is challenging Premier Danielle Smith to support the push for independence. Jeffrey Rath, the lawyer for the Alberta Prosperity Project, told Postmedia in an interview Tuesday that separatist canvassers had gathered more than the required 177,732 signatures and expect to far surpass that number before the May 2 deadline.
Pro-independence groups, including the Alberta Prosperity Project and Stay Free Alberta, actively collect signatures to trigger a referendum on independence. The petition requires approximately 177,000 valid signatures by May 2, 2026, to qualify for the ballot. These efforts include town halls, rallies, and canvassing across the province.
Recent polling indicates that support for Alberta’s independence is a minority position. An Angus Reid survey found that 65% of Albertans would vote to stay in Canada or lean that way, while only 29% would vote for separation. Support is higher among younger residents and some United Conservative Party (UCP) voters, but overall, the majority favors remaining part of Canada.
Polls also show that Albertans are concerned about economic risks if Alberta pursued independence, and people fear it would face the risk of annexation by the U.S..
Premier Smith personally opposes outright separation but has committed to respecting the democratic process if the petition qualifies.
Canada’s far-left government taxes them exorbitantly while limiting their ability to exploit their natural resources.
