The DoJ Begins the Denaturalization Process

The Justice Department will prioritize revoking the US citizenship of individuals charged with certain crimes, according to a memo issued by the agency earlier this month.

“The Civil Division shall prioritize and maximally pursue denaturalization proceedings in all cases permitted by law and supported by the evidence,” read a June 11 “enforcement priorities” memo sent by Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate to all employees within the DOJ’s Civil Division.

The purpose is to remove individuals who obtained US citizenship through fraud or misrepresentation.

This especially applies to those who “committed felonies that were not disclosed during the naturalization process” or “engaged in various forms of financial fraud against the United States.”

If misrepresentation is one of the categories, can we put Zohran Mamdani on the top of the lis?

“The Department of Justice may institute civil proceedings to revoke a person’s United States citizenship if an individual either ‘illegally procured’ naturalization or procured naturalization by ‘concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.’”

The 10 categories of crimes that could lead to citizenship being stripped range from “war crimes” to COVID loan fraud, according to the memo.

The categories include individuals connected with national security threats, such as terrorism, espionage, or those who illegally export sensitive technology. Other targets include war criminals, those affiliated with gangs, violent criminals, and human traffickers.

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib should be at the top of the list for denaturalization and deportation.
