There is an update here from The Washington Post claiming the police did not ignore witnesses who told them a man with a rifle climbed a nearby building at the Trump rally.
This is in the seconds before the shooting. They appear to be watching the shooter, and for some reason, they don’t shoot him after he gets five shots off. They probably couldn’t see him.
Can anyone explain this sniper’s reaction? It looked like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing…….pic.twitter.com/mHvc4Ib2GB

The Importance of Prayer: How a Christian Gold Company Stands Out by Defending Americans’ Retirement
The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump Saturday was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, sources told The Post.
Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pa., squeezed off shots — one of which grazed Trump in the ear — at an outdoor rally in Butler, just outside Pittsburgh.
Sources said Crooks was planted on the roof of a manufacturing plant more than 130 yards away from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds.
The cameraman, Michael Difrischia, panned back to the gunman after the retaliating rounds could be heard.
Difrischia told TMZ he and his wife, Amber, were watching the Trump rally from outside the main grounds … standing near some trees with about 30 to 40 other people when Amber noticed the dude climbing up onto a nearby building there.
Crooks shimmied up, then army crawled to his final position on the roof — all with a rifle in hand, mind you — and then he lined up his shot, despite people clearly noticing him down below and attempting to flag cops or whoever else would listen, TMZ was told.
The NY Times report:
The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday was identified by the F.B.I. as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pa., but officials released no additional information about him.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the F.B.I. said in a statement early Sunday.
The gunman did not have a criminal history reflected in Pennsylvania’s public court records, and officials said they had not identified a motive. A voter-registration record showed that Mr. Crooks was registered as a Republican, though federal campaign-finance records show he donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project, a liberal voter turnout group, through the Democratic donation platform ActBlue in January 2021.
Early on Sunday morning, law-enforcement officers had closed down all roads leading toward the home of the suspect’s family in Bethel Park, south of Pittsburgh and about an hour’s drive from the site of the rally in Butler. Numerous relatives did not respond to messages seeking comment.
…
Mr. Crooks appears to have graduated in 2022 from Bethel Park High School, which has about 1,400 students, and received a $500 “star award” that year from the National Math and Science Initiative, according to The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania.
