Obama Administration’s Hostile Takeover of the Little Sisters of the Poor

The HHS mandate, which unquestionably subjugates religious freedom to the dictates of government, went into effect on January 1.

Catholic institutions that did not receive a stay, have been forced to comply. Notre Dame sought an injunction in two courts and were refused. They now must comply while their case makes its way through the courts. Most religious nonprofits have been given temporary relief by the courts until their court cases are resolved.

One case was granted a temporary stay by Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor – the case of the Little Sisters of the Poor. She will make a decision in the case shortly. If she finds against the Little Sisters, they will be forced to pay prohibitive fines with money meant for the sick and the poor.

Little Sisters

For 175 years the nuns of Little Sisters of the Poor have been ministering to the elderly, poor and dying. They are selfless women who only want to be left alone to help others.

The Little Sisters refused to sign the “self-certification” notice for abortion services which is a back door scheme by the DOJ to get the Little Sisters to betray their religious faith. The notice is permission for a third party to provide abortion services to their employees, services that are against their religious beliefs.

It’s a meaningless accommodation and one that the administration can alter any time they want.

The Sisters are being defended by The Becket Fund.

“The government demands that the Little Sisters of the Poor sign a permission slip for abortion drugs and contraceptives, or pay millions in fines. The Sisters believe that doing that violates their faith, and that they shouldn’t be forced to divert funds from the poor elderly and dying people they’ve devoted their lives to serve.” — Mark Rienzi, Senior Counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and Lead Counsel for the Little Sisters.

This is no small matter. The HHS mandate is intended to end religious freedom and to make the State supreme over rights of conscience, which are no longer protected.

Mr. Obama invented a war on women and manufactured a crisis over the purported lack of contraceptives and abortifacients in order to relegate religious freedom to the State. There is no crisis. Birth control and abortifacients can be gotten very cheaply through federally-subsidized clinics.

Thanks to the HHS mandate, it is Mr. Obama who now decides what is a religious organization and who is allowed to exercise their rights of conscience and under what circumstances they are allowed to exercise those rights.

He wants the Little Sisters and the monks at Belmont Abbey to supply abortifacients and provide sterilizations! Think about it.

As Charles Krauthammer said, the administration is not only bullying Sisters, they are bullying Little Sisters, and not only Little Sisters but the Little Sisters of the Poor. It’s reminiscent of the Administration bullying aged WW II vets who were prevented from visiting the Memorials in DC during the partial government shutdown.

This is a takeover of religion in this country. Currently it mostly affects Catholics and Orthodox sects of other religions, but it will be abused further now that the camel’s nose is under the tent.

The frightening part of all this is people don’t seem to care. Even some Catholic institutions don’t want to object because they are liberals before they are religious.

We have lost our religious freedom and few care.

At issue is nothing less than America’s religious freedom, assured by the 1st amendment and reaffirmed by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act which passed Congress with bipartisan support in 1993 under President Clinton.

To assert that women’s health is harmed if the Sisters of the Poor do not provide abortion inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization insults the intelligence of us women and the common sense of all Americans.

Can a person make a contribution to the Becket Fund to help defray costs?

If so what is the valid address where contributions could be sent?

The Beckett Fund, Alliance Defending Freedom and Liberty Institute are all law firms dedicated to preserving religious liberty. All are worthy if our admiration and support…and prayers for their successes in defending our religious liberty.
