The New York State property-tax exemption program called STAR is possibly rife with corruption and fraud, according to the state auditors.
Twenty percent of those receiving STAR were not eligible because the homes claimed were not their primary residence. As much as $640 million out of $3.2 billion was awarded improperly in 2010 to 2011. That’s just one issue in one year. You know there are others.
They are having trouble keeping track of our tax money. It’s hard for them. Comptroller DiNapoli said, The STAR program has succeeded in delivering millions of dollars in tax relief, but it is difficult to ferret out abuse or even errors because it is hard to police the programs.”
I wonder what other violations have yet to be uncovered.
