Governor Scott Walker
WaPo reports that the liberal Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has endorsed Scott Walker against the Democratic challenger, Tom Barrett. The Journal is the largest paper in Wisconsin. They supported Walker over Barrett in 2010.
The Journal reported that, although Walker went too far in stripping bargaining rights from union employees, it is not enough to warrant a recall. They added that there has not been enough time to judge his job performance. [The recall came only 1 1/2 years into the Governor's term.]
The majority of people in Wisconsin believe that recalls should be reserved for criminal wrongdoing.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wrote -
“[A] disagreement over a single policy is simply not enough to justify a vote against the governor,” the board writes. “It’s time to end the bickering and get back to the business of the state. We’ve had our differences with the governor, but he deserves a chance to complete his term.”
According to the WSJ, the Democratic National Committee was never in favor of a recall with so much to lose but union leaders insisted. Now Wisconsin is being discussed as a swing state and the DNC is afraid that this election will help Mitt Romney in the presidential.
A Marquette University poll shows Walker with a 6 point lead (50-44) over Barrett. Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch holds a 47 to 41-percentage point lead over Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin president Mahlon Mitchell in that recall election, with 10 percent undecided.
