Brian Banks is a young man who was a 16-year old football standout in high school when a classmate, Wanette Gibson, accused him of kidnapping and rape. Her possible motivation was a $1.5 million dollar settlement with the school.

She felt guilty about his conviction and met with him in prison to apologize. Banks taped her admission that none of it was true.

She agreed to admit to enough of her lies in court so she didn’t have to give up the settlement money. Banks’ conviction was overturned in May after more than five years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

He now has an opportunity to play professional football thanks to the Atlanta Falcons, who are giving him a chance.

“Aside from getting my life back and my freedom back, this is the biggest accomplishment of my life,” he told reporters during a conference call.

Banks added:

“I had to watch my class go on and receive scholarships and play collegiate football on a high level,” he said. “For me I had to let those dreams go for me to focus on what was ahead of me, and that was five years in prison. That was a completely different life of violence and being away from your family. … Football was the last thing on my mind, and it wasn’t until a few months before I was actually being released from prison that I thought about possibly trying to play football again.” CNN

Hopefully, this tragic story will have a very happy ending. Judging from Mr. Banks spirit, it will.
