Gaylord Perry Reaches for the Moon on July 20th

Alvin Dark, one-time Manager of the San Francisco Giants, told reporters that they would put a man on the moon before Gaylord Perry would ever hit a home run. Gaylord was a notoriously bad-hitting pitcher for several years.

On July 20, 1969, Gaylord Perry hit his first major league homer, only hours after the US landed on the moon.

There are some who say the story can’t be proven but Dark never denied the account. There is other evidence that supports the account.

Perry was a great pitcher who had 314 wins in his long career.
