During an event marking the 25th anniversary of the presidency of George H. W. Bush at the library and museum that bears his name, Jeb Bush addressed immigration.
He said the bipartisan Senate bill was a “good effort” at proposing ways to ensure that people who overstay their visas leave the country.
“A great country ought to know where those folks are and politely ask them to leave,” he said, adding later that properly targeting people who overstay visas “would restore people’s confidence” in the nation’s immigration system.
“There are means by which we can control our border better than we have. And there should be penalties for breaking the law,” he added. “But the way I look at this — and I’m going to say this, and it’ll be on tape and so be it. The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally, they come to our country because their families — the dad who loved their children — was worried that their children didn’t have food on the table. And they wanted to make sure their family was intact, and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work to be able to provide for their family. Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love. It’s an act of commitment to your family. I honestly think that that is a different kind of crime that there should be a price paid, but it shouldn’t rile people up that people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families.”
Unfortunately, not everyone is coming out of love and we need to secure the borders.
Why don’t they invade other countries out of love? How about invading Cuba or El Salvador? Because they’d be thrown in jail? Why do we have to be polite and no one else does?
We have the DREAM Act illegally passed by President Obama and the problem is the same as this would present. How do you determine if they really were brought here as children through no fault of their own? We can’t, so, according to ICE, they all stay. All they have to do is say they are DREAMers and they can’t be deported, even when it’s blatantly obvious they’re not. That’s according to Chris Crane, the ICE union president.
I hope Jeb plans to take in some of these people while he’s being so generous with American’s money and resources, giving it away to people who come here illegally. It’s only fair that he bear his share of the burden.
Sounds like he’s running for president and pandering for the Hispanic vote. He just lost some Republican votes however.
He also said he doesn’t want to get into the mud and he wants to keep it clean. I want my candidate to get in the mud. I’m a get in the mud kind of gal. If he doesn’t want to get in the mud, perhaps he should stay in his tony neighborhood with his fancy-schmancy friends because he’s not based in reality.
Jeb thinks the Republican Party needs to branch out and take on some of the Democratic platform. He likes Common Core also. If Republicans are going to be a bad version of Democrats, who will real Republicans vote for?
