A man trying to help out a lesbian couple who wanted a child donated sperm in response to an ad. He signed away his parental rights. A Kansas judge now says he has to pay child support.
William Marotta never intended to be a father but Shawnee County District Court Judge Mary Mattivi said the parties didn’t involve a licensed physician in the artificial insemination process and Marotta therefore did not qualify as a sperm donor.
It seems the mother Jennifer Schriener received about $6000 in public assistance from the state. The state also wants him to pay future support.
Schreiner and her partner, Angela Bauer, placed an ad for a sperm donor on Craigslist. He responded but signed a contract waiving his parental rights and responsibilities.
The attorneys for the state said the contract was null and void because of an obscure 1994 state law that he never knew existed.
