The lifeguard of Hallandale Beach who was fired for leaving his post to save a drowning man will receive the key to the city this morning at 10:30 AM. The man he saved will be present. More on this later, check back.
He was fired by his boss as soon as he filled out the accident report. It gained worldwide attention and the company’s owner, Jeff Ellis, tried to rehire him, which he declined. Two other lifeguards were questioned at the time and asked what they would have done. When they said they’d do the same thing, they were fired. Four others quit in protest. All were offered their jobs back.
While Tomas Lopez was fired for leaving his area unattended, it was not. When you leave your post to save someone, the other lifeguards cover the area.
Tomas Lopez said he plans to go back to school and move ahead with a career.
