They killed Shorty, a defenseless 88-year old man, possibly to rob him.
An 88-year old man doesn’t put up much of a fight. Even if it was a robbery, they also wanted to murder him.
These are the same type of people who shoot a baby between the eyes. They didn’t use guns, they used their fists. They picked their victim carefully – an elderly man.
This crime was not about how they did it, but why.
It was likely a crime of opportunity – a random murder by soulless teens, another thrill kill, and at least one of whom probably had a connection to a gang, perhaps as a wannabe.
Two youths beat the 88-year old World War II veteran to death in Spokane Washington about 8 pm. He was left to die in his car with serious wounds to his head. He was waiting in his car for a friend before going inside to play pool in the Eagles Lodge. He was transported to the hospital where he died Thursday morning. His wife had died several years before.

Shorty was wounded in Okinawa defending his country. He liked to work on cars and help others. Family and friends describe Shorty as full of life.
Shorty’s best friend of 23 years, Ted Denison, played pool and worked on cars with him.
“He was always there for me when I needed him,” Denison said. “We’d joke back and forth. We were always having fun, some sort of fun.”
He was the kind of nice old man who’d become your friend in minutes.
“Probably every time I come into town, he’d have a project for me to do,” Denison said. “I thought of him more as a dad than I did a friend really.”
The photos of the murderers were released and one suspect was wearing a Do-Rag (gang symbol):
