Democrats are not only betraying the Navajo Nation, they are lying about it before Congress, even when the lies are obviously lies. The arrogance is unlike anything Americans have hitherto seen in U.S. government.
In August, an EPA-caused environmental disaster dumped 3 million gallons of toxic metals into the Animas and San Juan Rivers from the Gold King mine, and, in fact, the mine is still leaking. The figure of 3 million is suspect. One-third of the Navajo Nation relies on the Animas.
The EPA is trying to say the water is now safe and the toxins have been diluted even though these toxins (which are heavy metals) have settled to the bottom and on river banks. They can be kicked back up at any time.
The the president of the Navajo Nation Russell Begaye doesn’t accept the EPA’s narrative.
“There’s no way we can guarantee that the drinking water is safe,” Mr. Begaye said.
“We are asking the Democratic Party to have President Obama declare the river a disaster area — and we haven’t gotten anything. Nothing,” he said. “The Democrats? I don’t know what happened. We basically are Democrats. We always vote Democrat. But it seems like they’ve just walked away. And we’re not hearing anything that’s of value to us from the Democrats.”
“With Obama, we’ve been asking for him to at least give us a call and tell us you are there to help us and walk with us. But we have heard not a word. It seems like they’ve just closed the doors and walked away,” Begaye said. “We were the swing vote for them for years and they haven’t done a thing.”
The Democrats have come to take them for granted as they have the American blacks.
Begaye is in Washington this week for hearings and to meet with lawmakers. He’s also preparing a lawsuit against the EPA. The tribe has retained John Hueston of Hueston Hennigan LLP.
“We as a nation will support any person that’s willing to walk with us,” Begaye said. “If it’s Obama and the Democrats, or Republicans — whoever is willing to work with us, walk with us and work with us.
“It’s disturbing because this has happened to us over the years ever since we were put on reservations,” he said. “The same type of thing when it happens elsewhere? The government rushes in with millions of dollars. But not on our land — that’s always been the history.”
It is a disgrace.
The EPA even sent dirty, oily water to the Navajos for their livestock and crops.
Republicans are trying to get to the bottom of it but EPA Chief Gina McCarthy simply lies. She has already indicated that nothing will be done until the Inspector General’s independent review is completed. If a work order was not violated, she said, there will be no repercussions.
In far less serious circumstances with private companies, large fines and jail sentences have been meted out as we have previously discussed on the pages of the Sentinel.
The EPA is lying about so many things during the ongoing House hearings and she should be impeached for it.
The most recent lies concern the Navajos.
On August 11, President Begaye warned his people in emails and on Facebook not to sign the claim form being sent by the EPA.
In his post on Facebook, he wrote in part, “Standard Form No. 95 states the following: I CERTIFY THAT THE AMOUNT OF CLAIM COVERS ONLY DAMAGES AND INJURIES CAUSED BY THE INCIDENT ABOVE AND AGREE TO ACCEPT SAID AMOUNT IN “FULL SATISFACTION AND FINAL SETTLEMENT OF THIS CLAIM.”
All signors will be limited to the specific claims filed, and any future claims for injuries caused by the Gold King Mine will be waived.
The EPA passed these around almost immediately after the spill knowing that the contaminants could have long term repercussions.
See Standard Form 95 (PDF) for yourself.
Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) questioned McCarthy about the EPA’s attempts to deceive members of the Navajo Nation into signing away their future rights with an immediate settlement form.
“It’s my understanding,” she said, “We did not hand out claim forms. We had a long discussion following that concern and we are now getting claim forms.”
It was a blatant lie.
“You are not telling the truth,” he said, quoting President Begaye’s comments about the forms.
McCarthy then admitted that Form 95 went around but “It is not a settlement or a release form.”
There was a back-and-forth about whether it was a release form, which it obviously is and which she lied about – bald-faced lied about something that is obviously not true.
She knows she can say anything and will not be held accountable. In fact, Obama probably praises her for her wiliness. It’s the Alinsky way, seriously it is a tactic. The end justifies the means.
Chaffetz suggested that there will be more co-sponsors to the bill of impeachment which has been prepared. Let’s hope they do it.
In case you haven’t seen the un-doctored video of the spill, here it is again (that’s right, at first the EPA put a doctored video on their website and lied about why it was doctored on the site and before Congress.)
