Democrats Betray the Navajo Nation

Democrats are not only betraying the Navajo Nation, they are lying about it before Congress, even when the lies are obviously lies. The arrogance is unlike anything Americans have hitherto seen in U.S. government.

In August, an EPA-caused environmental disaster dumped 3 million gallons of toxic metals into the Animas and San Juan Rivers from the Gold King mine, and, in fact, the mine is still leaking. The figure of 3 million is suspect. One-third of the Navajo Nation relies on the Animas.

The EPA is trying to say the water is now safe and the toxins have been diluted even though these toxins (which are heavy metals) have settled to the bottom and on river banks. They can be kicked back up at any time.

The the president of the Navajo Nation Russell Begaye doesn’t accept the EPA’s narrative.

“There’s no way we can guarantee that the drinking water is safe,” Mr. Begaye said.

“We are asking the Democratic Party to have President Obama declare the river a disaster area — and we haven’t gotten anything. Nothing,” he said. “The Democrats? I don’t know what happened. We basically are Democrats. We always vote Democrat. But it seems like they’ve just walked away. And we’re not hearing anything that’s of value to us from the Democrats.”

“With Obama, we’ve been asking for him to at least give us a call and tell us you are there to help us and walk with us. But we have heard not a word. It seems like they’ve just closed the doors and walked away,” Begaye said. “We were the swing vote for them for years and they haven’t done a thing.”

The Democrats have come to take them for granted as they have the American blacks.

Begaye is in Washington this week for hearings and to meet with lawmakers. He’s also preparing a lawsuit against the EPA. The tribe has retained John Hueston of Hueston Hennigan LLP.

“We as a nation will support any person that’s willing to walk with us,” Begaye said. “If it’s Obama and the Democrats, or Republicans — whoever is willing to work with us, walk with us and work with us.

“It’s disturbing because this has happened to us over the years ever since we were put on reservations,” he said. “The same type of thing when it happens elsewhere? The government rushes in with millions of dollars. But not on our land — that’s always been the history.”

It is a disgrace.

The EPA even sent dirty, oily water to the Navajos for their livestock and crops.

Republicans are trying to get to the bottom of it but EPA Chief Gina McCarthy simply lies. She has already indicated that nothing will be done until the Inspector General’s independent review is completed. If a work order was not violated, she said, there will be no repercussions.

In far less serious circumstances with private companies, large fines and jail sentences have been meted out as we have previously discussed on the pages of the Sentinel.

The EPA is lying about so many things during the ongoing House hearings and she should be impeached for it.

toxic spill

The most recent lies concern the Navajos.

On August 11, President Begaye warned his people in emails and on Facebook not to sign the claim form being sent by the EPA.

All signors will be limited to the specific claims filed, and any future claims for injuries caused by the Gold King Mine will be waived.

The EPA passed these around almost immediately after the spill knowing that the contaminants could have long term repercussions.

See Standard Form 95 (PDF) for yourself.

Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) questioned McCarthy about the EPA’s attempts to deceive members of the Navajo Nation into signing away their future rights with an immediate settlement form.

“It’s my understanding,” she said, “We did not hand out claim forms. We had a long discussion following that concern and we are now getting claim forms.”

It was a blatant lie.

“You are not telling the truth,” he said, quoting President Begaye’s comments about the forms.

McCarthy then admitted that Form 95 went around but “It is not a settlement or a release form.”

There was a back-and-forth about whether it was a release form, which it obviously is and which she lied about – bald-faced lied about something that is obviously not true.

She knows she can say anything and will not be held accountable. In fact, Obama probably praises her for her wiliness. It’s the Alinsky way, seriously it is a tactic. The end justifies the means.

Chaffetz suggested that there will be more co-sponsors to the bill of impeachment which has been prepared. Let’s hope they do it.

In case you haven’t seen the un-doctored video of the spill, here it is again (that’s right, at first the EPA put a doctored video on their website and lied about why it was doctored on the site and before Congress.)

  1. Why rely on any political party for help? Both republican and democrat parties are filled with criminals posing as politicians. Look what McCain and Flake did to Oak Flat!
We the people have only ourselves to rely on now, we can no longer expect our government to protect us or help us when their ultimate goal appears to be total annihilation of our rights not only as citizens, but as human beings.
Remember Ann kirkpatrick, who was literally driven from office, then ran again for the other team, claiming to have grown up on the wmat reservation to gain the Native vote? She betrayed every Native American who supported her the minute she was in office. And by the way, I grew up there, she lived in pinetop, the only time she came to the “filthy reservation” was when her family brought her to the general store there in our logging town of McNary.
You cannot put any faith or trust in any of our politicians, they almost all are in the pay of big corporations, both foreign and American, and they are selling our country down a deadly toxic river to line their own pockets. I’m betting this epa bitch got plenty of kickbacks and bribes, but it will be called donations or consulting fees…..

  2. I’m calling on all Democratic candidates in Arizona besides myself as a Progressive Democratic Candidate for the U.S. Senate …

to stand in solidarity with our brother and sister Native Americans on the Navajo nation and Apache nations to demand that Congress and the president immediately resume clean water shipments to the Navajo Nation as the Navajo president requests and ….. to immediately stop the foreign corporation from building another poisonous mine on sacred Apache land at Oak Flats …

P.S. especially Democratic congress person and Conservative Democratic U.S. Candidate Ann Kirkpatrick who supposedly represents some of them in Congress and who likes to have photo ops with them … but then gives only words when it comes to doing justice by them.

    Leonard Clark ,
Progressive Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate

  3. these jerks from the epa and the Obama administration need to own up to this and fix it before it kills people, hurts the fishing, and the earth. but just like everything in this regime it will probably be washed under the table, and blamed on someone else (bush did it is their favorite saying)

  4. Not that I am condoning what the EPA did but, the jist of what I am getting from Mr. Begaye’s statements are that whoever is willing to give the Navajo nation money will get the votes of the Navajo nation in the upcoming election. Yeah, that is how the democratic election process is supposed to work….

  5. This spill was done with malice and forethought. A geologist predicted that the actions the EPA was taking would result in this massive contamination a week before it occurred in a letter to the editor of a Silverton paper. And then his prediction came true but the EPA was baffled and surprised by the massive spill and contamination. It was done on purpose. Why? Who knows. Probably so they could ask for a bigger budget funded by loans from China and the nations children like the 12 trillion Obama has already added to the deficit.

  6. Having taught and served as principal at Sun Valley Indian School near Holcomb, AZ I, well know the struggle for livelihood among my dear Dene people and the back stabbing from the federal government with their broken promises, treaties, pacts and vows. As a Geographer and historian I knew as soon as the news of the spill that it would be trouble for my dear Dene.

  7. Start calling the White House and leaving a message for President Obama. Volunteers work the phone lines Mon-Friday, and will take down a brief message to give to the President. The call is free. The number is 202-456-1111 If the phone lines get swamped, and a ton of messages get to the President, it might get the ball rolling. Being a politician use to be an honorable job, as a servant of the people, but it now seems that politicians are in it for the money and they have no loyalty to their constituents. I will be making a call on Monday. This will be my second one regarding the water contamination and the oil tanks used to store potable water.
