Obama Smiles on as Merkel Talks About Censoring Right-Wingers on the Internet

German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined lame duck President Barack Obama for a press conference yesterday. Both addressed the unwanted surge of populism in their respective countries but what was more alarming were their comments about the Internet. Obama and Merkel blamed the Internet and social media for the opposition to their agenda and Merkel sees it as something that needs to be controlled and steered by government.

Calling the surge of interest in right-wing politics a “wave” that “engulfs us,” Ms. Merkel noted the sentiment “seems to come from the United States,” she was likely thinking of Donald Trump.

“Look at the European parliament. There are a lot of people who are looking for simplistic solutions and are preaching simplistic solutions which are very unfriendly policies. We have them here in Europe, too, we have them in Germany too.”

Every opponent is a racist in their minds!

Merkel suggested the Internet would have to be subject to restrictive censorship laws as were enacted by many European nations.

“Digitisation is a disruptive technological force that brings about deep-seated change and transformation in society. Look at the history of the printing press, when this was invented what kind of consequences it had. Or industrialization, what consequences that had.”

“Very often, it led to enormous transformational processes within individual societies and it took a while until societies learned to find the right kinds of policies to contain this, to manage and steer this. We live in a period of profound transformation,” the globalist control freak said.

The chancellor spoke out against populists in her country who are opposed to mass migration and what they perceive as Islamization.

Ms. Merkel’s comments on web censorship would undoubtedly be welcomed by mainstream media who see alternative media as unfair competition.

This week Germany’s Zeit newspaper published a piece calling for controls to prevent “a German Donald Trump”, while Britain’s Independent former newspaper website published a list of “fake” news sites which they claimed may have “swayed votes towards Donald Trump”. One of those listed was Breitbart News. In the US, the social media giants are beginning to censor “fake news”. So far, on Twitter, they’re censoring right-wing twitter accounts.

Facebook, Google and Twitter are working with German authorities to control speech as angry citizens react to the chaos caused by refugees. The Germans made a deal with the social-media giants to shut down free speech.

“We’ve looked at our general rules and understand that very specific forms of language may constitute hate speech,” Richard Allan, Facebook’s vice president of public policy in Europe, told the Washington Post in early January of this year. “Our German reviews are reviewing the meanings of German words and trying to understand what language crosses the line.”
